Women in Europe for a Common Future: a European NGO network

WECF is an international network of women’s and environmental organisations, implementing projects in 40 countries within Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia and advocating a healthy environment at global level for us all. WECF taps into the potential of women to balance the environment, health and economy.

WECF was founded in 1994 following the Earth Summit in Rio (1992), to give women a stronger voice in the field of sustainable development and in developing environmental policies.

 

 

WECF in the world

The WECF European network has three offices :
• France – WECF France Association ;
• Netherlands – "Stichting WECF" Foundation ;
• Germany - WECF eV.

WECF objectives :
• non toxic chemicals for all ;
• clean and affordable energy for all ;
• clean water and safe sanitation for all ;
• rural development and safe food production for all

To achieve these objectives, WECF is working to :
• reduce poverty ;
• raise public awareness of environmental health issues ;
• ensure a greater consideration of health and environmental issues within policies at national, European and international level
• promote public participation and environmental rights (Aarhus Convention);
• Encourage a better balance between men and women’s roles

Advocacy and field projects
WECF projects offer safe, ecological solutions to local problems in the areas of sanitation, energy, agriculture and chemicals. Through its advocacy work, WECF offers women’s perspectives to policymakers at national, European, international levels.


International recognition

WECF has NGO status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

WECF is an official partner of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and an elected representative of the women's major group.

WECF is a member of the European Environment and Health Committee (EEHC).

WECF in France

ECF France is the French branch of WECF, founded on 31 March 2008 as an association  governed by the 1901 French law and an integral part of the WECF international network.

The aims of WECF France are to:

  1. promote environmental protection and sustainable development ;
  2. promote public health, by taking into account the impacts on health of environmental damage and pollution of all kinds ;
  3. promote gender equality and women’s role in society.

Among the projects being developed at national level:

  • Nesting project: a website, interactive workshops for parents and training courses for professionals on the theme: Creating a safe indoor environment for your child ;
  • advocacy at national level for ambitious health / environmental protection and collaboration policies ;
  • articipation, in tandem with local associations, in international solidarity initiatives centred on sustainable rural development, taking gender into consideration ;
  • coordination of an ecological sanitation project in Romania, Bulgaria and Ukraine ;
  • involvement of partners … at local level in renewable energy projects ;

WECF France in Annemasse

The WECF’s French branch was founded in 2008, choosing to set up its headquarters in the Cité de la Solidarité Internationale.

WECF France has two offices in the Cité de la Solidarité Internationale at 1, Place de l’Eglise St. André in Annemasse (France - Haute-Savoie).

 

The WECF France team comprises an office director, development officer, and advocacy and events coordinators. The NGO runs a regular internship scheme.

Next year it will also be moving into brand new offices in the new Etoile Annemasse-Genève business district.

As a member of the "Annemasse, Solidarité Internationale" Collective which brings together 17 local international solidarity associations, 3 youth and cultural centres (MJC) and the town of Annemasse, WECF France is actively involved in the life of the local community.

Examples of projects undertaken by WECF France in the Rhône-Alpes area:

  • launch of a sustainable, local-level agricultural project within the context of the SSE network: 2 Savoie Léman Solidaire, an SSE network operating in Haute-Savoie.
  • partnership with the IUT (University Institute of Technology) in Annecy and the Lycée Jean Monnet (Jean Monnet High School) involving students working on the Professional Master’s Programme in Renewable and Electrical Energy ;
  • training of ‘Nesting’ workshop coordinators: Awareness raising sessions for prospective and new parents on indoor air quality with workshops held at the MJC Centre (Annemasse) and at Botanic (www.projetnesting.fr) ;
  • workshops on water organised at the La Chamarette school (Annemasse) and at Festimôm (Annemasse Youth and Cultural Centre in 2009): Where does tap water come from, water quality, protecting our water sources, etc.
  • fun workshops on boy-girl equality, as part of a project supported by the Rhône-Alpes region. Designed for pupils aged 10 - 11, these workshops address the following issues: the roles of men and women both in society and at home, boy-girl relations at school, in play, etc.
